Q&A with Sasha Robinson, Founder of Virtuous Queens Publishing

0

I’m a big kid! I love to watch old school cartoons with my daughters. I also like old black and white movies, and I’m a reality tv junkie. Of course I love going to church and I also love to work out.

Tell us a bit about Virtuous Queens Publishing.

Virtuous Queens Publishing is a company that I started in 2017 to publish my own Urban Christian fiction books.

What gave you the idea for your business and how did it start?

I started Virtuous Queens publishing not only to be taken more seriously as a first time self published author, but to give other women the opportunity to publish also.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love the fact that I can put my words out the way I want by self publishing. Some people want to go the traditional route and wait for someone to publish them but not me. When I think it, I write it, and if I want to publish it, I shouldn’t have to wait to be justified.

What are your keys to making yourself productive?

Alot of the stories I write come from things I’ve seen in my day to day life. I can be sitting in a restaraunt and overhear a conversation and think to myself “That’s a good idea for a story”. The key to my productivity is getting out in the world and exploring. I’ve been identified as a bit of an introvert. I plan to change that! So in doing this I’ll be killing two birds with one stone. I’ll be enhancing my writing skills and changing my personality profile.

Tell us one long-term goal in your career.

In the future I would like to make at least two of my books into films. I wrote a play this year and the production process was fascinating to me! Working with the actors and watching what they added to the characters was amazing. The best part was watching the audience’s reaction, like “Wow, I wrote that, and they love it.” So, it would be a dream come true to see some of my work on the silver screen.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned through the course of your career?

Sacrifice and discipline are crucial and necessary for desired results.
Being a single mom, and chasing a dream has been tough this past year. There were nights that I could hear my bed calling my name, but I pushed myself to finish my projects. It was all worth it in the end.

What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?

Your vision, is your vision. Don’t compromise. When I look at the Urban fiction genre I see that most books are about sex, money, and drugs. Being a Christian I don’t lead that kind of life, so I don’t write about those things. I do however have characters in my books that have been delivered from those things like I have. Everybody may not be receptive to what I stand for, but as long as I get my message out, I could sell 3 books in 4 years, and I’d be satisfied.

What are your favorite things to do outside of work?

I’m a big kid! I love to watch old school cartoons with my daughters. I also like old black and white movies, and I’m a reality tv junkie. Of course I love going to church and I also love to work out.

Name a few influential books you’ve read and/or websites you keep up with that you’d recommend to readers.

“No more Sheets” Prophetess Juanita Bynum
