Q&A with Mista Blu Creative Director of Thr33 D Dezines
Tell us a bit about Thr33 D Dezines.
Thr33 D Dezines is a menswear brand founded in diversity and inclusion. We are a big and tall luxury brand. I developed the concept about 16 years ago but put it off to deal with life in the real world up until 2 years ago. I’m a self taught designer and somehow, just sort of knew what I was doing. I learned to take risks and try many things.
I would buy plain clothes and customize them to suit my design needs. I would cut, fabric paint, glue, patch, and stitch by hand to upgrade my look to accompany a shoe, or to fit my desired colour scheme.
Currently, we currently offer a limited high top basketball sneaker in Italian leather.
Our product offering is expanding to proper fitting designer apparel for the man of size and individuals that identify as a man of size.
What gave you the idea for your business and how did it start?
When I was looking around on Instagram, online shopping, and in the mall stores, I noticed product offerings for men of size aren’t readily available, nor were the most visually appealing. We don’t have access to stylish and trendy designer clothes. We aren’t represented in the most positive light, showcased in campaigns, nor dressed in display windows.
I realized I needed to be the change I want to see.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about being a designer for the man of size market is empowering my tribe to look and feel their best.
What are your keys to making yourself productive?
The keys to making myself productive are completing tasks concurrently. I work various designs at the same time at the same phase. I bulk schedule myself for putting out multiple versions of pattern making, fabric selection, cutting, pre-construction, finishing, etc.
Tell us one long-term goal in your career.
One career long term career goal is to develop a scholarship program that provides styling and design students with the funds needed to obtain quality education regardless of pedigree.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned through the course of your career?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned at this stage in my career is to do my best. I was placed here to make a difference. No one else can do what I’m doing the same way I’m delivering it. There’s value in that.
What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?
Some advice I would give to others aspiring to succeed in the field would be to advertise and market your products appropriately. Don’t underestimate the power of marketing. Make high-quality products. Don’t skimp on quality to sell a few more pieces. Ask for help when you need it.
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
My favorite things to do outside of work is shopping, traveling, dancing, listening to music, sketching, spending time with loved ones.
