Tell us a bit about what you do.
I am a Medicare Sales and Marketing Director. I am responsible for the growth of the Dual Special Needs Medicare Advantage product in the State of New York. We work with our internal departments as well as our local communities to put together the most comprehensive and viable health insurance plans for New York State residents.
What gave you the idea to pursue this line of work? How did it start?
I started in healthcare as a Health Educator eight years ago creating community health education programs. I’ve always enjoyed helping others and providing a service for the local and state communities and this was a great opportunity to make a living while doing so.
What’s your favorite thing about your chosen profession?
I am always helping people and that is one of my passions. I help people get access to health insurance benefits that help them live healthier, happier lives. It’s important to me to make sure that healthcare is accessible to as many people as possible so that the people in these communities can live their best lives. The appreciation that the people in our local communities show to us when we are able to help them is amazing and really helps to motivate and drive you to continue helping.
What keys to being productive can you share with us?
I exercise in the morning even if its for 15-20 minutes. I also make time daily for mindful mediation. Another method that I’ve found to help keep me productive is to find literature, or audio clips that inspire you. I will tap into these resources when I feel stuck, they help me get me refocus my creativity and allow me to get back into the right mind frame. Lastly, be fully present when working on projects. If you start something, finish it even if it’s a draft before moving onto the next project.
Tell us one long-term goal in your career.
I would like to one day be a leading executive in my field of work. My goal is to be a CEO of the company I’m with or of my own business. I would love to have the responsibility that comes along with a role like this. I have worked and continue to work toward this goal. I`m currently doing further education work with eCornell to earn a certificate in Strategic Healthcare Leadership which has been very enjoyable so far.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned through the course of your career?
Your time is the greatest resource and one thing you can’t get back. To execute at the top level, you have to understand the full gravity of time. It’s imperative to prioritize your life and business in a way that lines up with what you value most. You don`t want to look back and think of all of the time that you wasted doing things that aren`t important and that is something that helps motivate me everyday to make the most out of every minute I have.
What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?
By keeping your mind open to new ideas and embracing innovation, you make opportunities for yourself. By exposing yourself to a multitude of businesses and products, your scope expands. Conversely, if you always have your blinders on, your perspective becomes too narrow and you miss out on promising opportunities. Make sure that you are open to new and unfamiliar situations. I know that it can be difficult but, subjecting yourself to experiences that are outside of your comfort zone is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself.
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
Spend time with my family and in nature. I have a multitude of different hobbies that I like to take part in. Dance, travel, yoga, play darts, rollerblade, hike, read, and boat. Dance is my favourite activity to be a part of outside of work, reading is a close second. They are both great tools for me to relieve stress, learn, and keep my body and mind in shape.
Name a few influential books you’ve read and/or websites you keep up with that you’d recommend to readers.
7 habits of highly effective people, think and grow rich, the Coaching Habit. I highly recommend that you read these if you have the opportunity to. They are great tools.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Believe in yourself, intuition, and vision. Most of my lessons came from failures, setbacks, and defeats. Although painful, they developed my self-awareness. They forced me to spend time on mastering my thoughts and emotions. Don`t second guess yourself, ninety-nine percent of the time what your gut is telling is correct. Believe in your experiences and knowledge.
