Born in 1960 in Schenectady, New York, Dr. Janet French moved to Louisville, Kentucky when as a young girl where she remained in Louisville through college, attending the University of Louisville graduating with honors with a Registered Nursing degree. Moving to Virginia Dr. Janet French worked locally primarily in Intensive Care and Cardiac Care Units. After having three children, she decided to continue providing a high quality of direct patient care and went back to school. Driving 4 hours each way for four years Janet completed a Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia. Once again Dr. Janet French graduated with honors and immediately began practicing general dentistry in a family practice.

Dr. Janet French, DDS fell in love with the New River Valley area while visiting her daughter, who attended college at nearby Virginia Tech. During visits, she quickly came to adore its community, overall feel, and general locality.

Soon after in 2009, she established herself professionally in the area, eventually coming to own and operate two general dentistry practices in both Dublin and Floyd. Since then, she’s fallen in love with the local communities and has relished every opportunity they have provided her to care for the oral health of their individuals and families. Here, she explains some of the many rewards she’s discovered while practicing family dentistry in small-town communities.

1. Tell us a bit about what you do.
I provide family oriented general dentistry services. We see both children and adults and provide hygiene, preventative and restorative oral health services.

2. What gave you the idea for (what you do/your company)? How did it start?
I originally was a Registered Nurse (and still maintain my RN credentials). In order to continue to provide healthcare services but in a patient oriented environment I went back to school (Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia) and obtained my DDS degree. I immediately began practicing in a family oriented general dentistry practice, bringing my existing experience in direct patient care to a dental environment.

3. What’s your favorite thing about your chosen profession?
I enjoy my day to day interactions with my patients, whether it is relieving pain, educating them on oral health, or assisting them in achieving a confident smile.

4. What keys to being productive can you share with us?
Maintaining a realistic schedule, as well as having a phenomenal and very experienced staff.

5. Tell us one long-term goal in your career.
My goal everyday is to ensure my patients long term oral health and to help give them back their smile.

6. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned through the course of your career?
No one can do it alone, without the support of my amazing staff our office would not be as wonderful as it is today.

7. What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?
Always ask questions. The best way to learn is to be inquisitive about what is going on around you.

8. What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
Our family loves animals and we are involved in local animal rescue. On weekends I am often found out on the local trails riding my horse with my daughter.

9. Name a few influential books you’ve read and/or websites you keep up with that you’d recommend to readers.
I enjoy reading nonfiction books, including those about past presidents, animal behavior, and major historical events.

10. What advice would you give your younger self?
Be active. Being actively engaged in your life, whether in leisure, education or work life, it can lead to some of your greatest enjoyment.
