Interview with Sabina Covo, Owner of Sabina Covo Communications

Former City of Miami Commissioner (2023) Sabina Covo is a political TV and Radio news host and a journalist. She is currently a political news analyst and a business consultant specialized in public affairs, and public relations. She was a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in the years 2021 and 2022.

Sabina has worked for Mega TV, America TV, Univision and NBC/ Telemundo in Miami, Florida and multiple radio networks. Former Board-member at USF’s Digital Marketing Program and political analyst for CNN and other news networks.

Sabina was elected to the City of Miami Commission with 10 points over 12 candidates and served year 2023. Her legislative priorities included initiatives with environmental sustainability, workforce housing, creative traffic patterns and vehicle solutions and increased public safety. Sabina proposed and passed the City’s first heat mitigation master plan mirroring other developed cities in the world which are suffering from extreme heat waves. She also passed legislation to direct the city to create a yearly and long-term flood mitigation action plan. She was the chairwoman of the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency.

She was the first Colombian American to be elected to the City of Miami Commission and the first woman to be elected to District 2. She has been named as one of the most influential Colombian Americans in South Florida by Broward County and Las Americas Community Center. She was also awarded by Brickell Magazine as one of South Florida’s Top 20 Professionals under 40.

Sabina has worked as a Director of Media relations for Gordon Reyes and Associates and was nominated for a Rising Star Award by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In 2007 she founded Copy Write Agency through which she has managed PR and branding for different brands in the US and Latin America and later joined Audi of Latin America as a Spokesperson and PR Manager. In 2014 Sabina Covo Communications was born with the objective of assisting corporate clients with their communication strategies, specifically towards the Hispanic market and emerging markets like Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and others in Latin America.

She has multiple journalism awards including a Gabriel Garcia Marquez Scholarship award and was the president of Sharing for Kids.

 

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I am a former news reporter and anchor, a published writer, and the co-founder and director of Sabina Covo Communications and PR Agency based in Miami, Florida. Our agency manages a diverse portfolio of accounts, promoting them in local, national, and international markets through effective communication strategies.

 

What gave you the idea for your company? How did it start?

With extensive experience as a reporter, I met many people in the media industry and saw a need for brands to communicate effectively. This inspired me to start my own communications and PR agency to help brands achieve their goals.

 

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I love the creativity and the ever-changing environment that comes with my job.

 

What are your keys to making yourself productive?

Effective time management and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are crucial to my productivity.

 

Tell us one long-term goal in your career.

To write a second book: one that empowers women to reach their full potential.

 

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned through the course of your career?

As simple as it may sound, I’ve learned that you can’t trust everyone. Selecting the right team is crucial for growing a business.

 

What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?

Be perseverant, creative, active, and dynamic every day.

 

What are your favorite things to do outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, playing tennis, and riding horses.

Some influential books I recommend are “Bossypants” by Tina Fey, “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg, and “The Art of the Novel” by Milan Kundera.

 

What advice would you give your younger self?
