Dr. Troy Dreiling of Zenaptic Chiropractic Shares What Spinal Decompression Treatments Really Look Like and How They Can Be Effective

Dr. Troy Dreiling is an expert Chiropractor and owner of Zenaptic Chiropractic.  He has over 21 years of experience helping people with their pain relief needs and alignment issues.  Through his many years as a Chiropractor and having his own back issues, he learned about a procedure called Spinal Decompression.  Working one on one with another Doctor, he was able to relieve his lower back pain and learn about the procedure first hand.  He was able to incorporate this into his practice, thus benefitting his patients even further.  Often times the patient responds quite well to Spinal Decompression and may be able to avoid back surgery.

Dr. Troy Dreiling goes above and beyond his regular chiropractic care practice. He wants to teach people about a healthier way of living and introduce them to alternative methods to treatment. He does this by hosting various events such as free back pain workshops and spinal molding classes where he talks to people about healing their back pain without surgery and dangerous medications. At times he also offers a cooking class that shows you how to enjoy your favorite carbs, get healthy food recipes and much more.

Patients, friends and family of Dr. Troy Dreiling understand that chiropractic care isn’t only about getting adjustments but it’s about a healthier lifestyle.

How did you get into Spinal Decompression?

When I was twelve years old, I was injured riding a three wheeler.  This began my lower back problems.  I could not stand up so I went to a Chiropractor and he fixed me up.  Then, when I was nineteen, I began body building I re-aggravated my back again doing dead lifts.  This became chronic lower back issues.

About seven years ago, I travelled to the East Coast and did some very intense work outs.  I flew back on the red eye and had slept very little.  The next day I was barely able to stand up and it took me about a half an hour to put my socks on.  I was in some serious pain.

I was able to find a gentleman who did Decompression with the DRX9000.  I was trying Chiropractic, Acupuncture, stretching, and other techniques to alleviate my back pain and nothing was working.  However, he was able to help me.  I was able to stand up in the vertical position thanks to him and that is when I know I was going to get better.  I felt relief right away.  He worked on me for a while and I was good again.

Then, about two years ago I picked up my daughter, who is three, and put her on the toilet.  Immediately I felt my lower back go back into pain again.  It was very, very bad.

I was trying to find a Doctor who did Spinal Decompression because the initial gentleman who helped me was no longer in practice.  I found an ‘Old Timer’ in Portland named Dr. Jeff Tunic who asked me to get an MRI.  We reviewed the MRI and he showed me what was going on with my back.  I worked with him for quite some time.  He was very careful because these were chronic issues, but they cleared up and I was able to move and roll over again.

He then said he would teach me how to do Spinal Decompression.  I said ‘Great’!  He really got me in to Spinal Decompression and how it works.  We discussed the MRI’s and the imaging that you do and how to get the patients better with rehabilitation and decompression.

That is really what got me in to Spinal Decompression was Dr. Tunic and his elegant way of helping people get better without drugs and surgery.  I have always followed the Chiropractic principles of doing things naturally; heal the body naturally.  It just made sense that we can take a patient who does not respond to traditional Chiropractic care and get them some serious relief with the procedures, the rehabilitation, and the protocols that we use for Spinal Decompression.

So, what got me in to it was personal experience, multiple times, and I know it works.  That excites me as I help my patients get better because I know it worked for me.

What is the effectiveness rate of Spinal Decompression?

The effectiveness rate, from what I have seen clinically, is very, very good.  There is research and studies available that say 86% of patience have significant relief from back pain.  Usually we see the patient respond right away if Spinal Decompression is for them.

What is the typical treatment cycle for someone?  Is it four visits?  Forty visits?  What do you typically see?

It can vary depending on severity of the patient.  If they are degenerative, if they have a lot of bulging, if they have tears, or if they have inflammation, it could be a few weeks to a few months.  It really depends on their condition and how bad they are.  That is why we do a consultation, examination, history intake, and review the imaging to see exactly the extent of their problem.  This way we know the best course of action to help them get better.

Is Spinal Decompression covered by insurance?

Many insurance companies do allow us to do the therapy on them.  Many times it is considered a rehabilitation protocol, as much of what we are doing is rehabilitation.  A lot of patients might have an insurance benefit that covers rehab and that is what we focus on if we bill their insurance company.  If people do not have insurance, we have plans that make it affordable so they can get the care they need.  People often have a misconception that Chiropractic care is so expensive.  Back surgery will cost $60,000 – 80,000, and I have seen it go as high as $180,000.  So, we try to make it affordable so that people can get the care they need so that they may be able to avoid surgery altogether.
